Welcome Holly & Jordan from "Trockle!"
Mood:  celebratory
Now Playing: Coldplay, "Viva la Vida"

I just want to welcome Holly Jahangiri and Jordan Vinyard from the children's book, "Trockle."  They're currently on a Blog tour and today we get to spend a little time with them.

I'm very excited to talk to Holly & Jordan about their book.  I had the opportunity to pick it up a couple of weeks ago and it's just a fun, engaging children's book that I enjoyed very much.

I did a review for the book, which I posted on Amazon.com.  Holly or Jordan if there's more places you'd like me to put it, let me know.  I'm going to go ahead and share my review and then I have FIVE questions for you.

Book Review for “Trockle”

By: Holly Jahangiri

Illustrated by: Jordan Vinyard

ISBN: 978-0-9797513-2-5

4RV Publishing, LLC

24 Pages

5 Stars

“Trockle” is an engaging children’s story that answers the age-old question, “Who’s that lurking under the bed?” Jahangiri paints as vivid a picture with her words as Vinyard paints with her colors. Children of all ages will enjoy “Trockle.”

Stephen is an everyday little boy who has one last snack and a glass of milk before bed. He brushes his teeth and savors his parent’s hugs, but not even his mom’s can of monster repellent will convince him that the monster under his bed is gone. His dad tries to tell Stephen the monster is only ‘socks and books,’ but Stephen knows better. When his parents ask for the monster’s name, Stephen has an answer – “Trockle.” His parents give him a hug, reassure him he’ll be okay, and leave.

Under the bed, shoes and pens start to rustle about. Trockle can’t get to sleep. There was a monster over his bed! Trockle’s mother tries to tell him there are no monsters over the bed, but Trockle knew better. The monster over the bed made the ceiling squeak and creak. He tried to describe the monster to his mother. Trockle’s mother finally admitted to Trockle there wasn’t a monster over the bed, but a little boy. In their sleep, both Trockle and Stephen wish each other good night.

Trockle was inspired by the bedtime stories the author would share with her son. The book is richly illustrated by Jordan Vinyard. Her wonderful drawings bring life and heart to Stephen and Trockle. Each character is unique, each page captures the reader’s imagination.

The story is well paced and keenly plotted. The opening is one that young readers can identify with – the nerve racking nighttime ritual. Stephen’s anxiety is one all children share with him. Haven’t we thought there was a monster under the bed? What sparkles about “Trockle” is that now the monster under the bed has a face with real feelings, emotions, and anxieties, just like the rest of us. Jahangiri and Vinyard connect with readers not just on the surface, but in their hearts.

The descriptions in the book are right on the mark. Trockle, while sweet, looks like a monster. He’s got one big eye and pimples all over. He loves to eat chocolate from Chaco-Taco wrappers.

Young readers will enjoy reading Trockle on their own. It’s the type of book children can share with a giggle and a smile with their friends.  For an extra touch, the back cover of the book mirrors the front. Trockle is a sure-fire hit.

Nice review.  Trockle is a very delightful character.  Even my 15yo has read the book and enjoyed it (and she is a nonreader - she will check books out and never read them or ask to buy a book only to partially read and never finish).  I think Jordan has done a wonderful job in capturing the sens of the monster under the bed with something adorable.  - E :)

Ely,

I agree - I think Jordan did a FANTASTIC job capturing that sense of something under the bed and making him cute.  She really brought the monster to life - kinda' like "Monsters, Inc."  I thought those Monsters were really cute too.

I have a son who is 6 and I've read him the book. He really enjoyed it.  Of course, he's just at that age were he believes there's "something" under his bed late at night...

Thank you, Steph, for hosting a stop on the Trockle Book Blog Tour.  The review is great, and thanks for posting it on Amazon, too.

How long have I been writing? Almost as long as I can remember. I was an avid reader by age three; I had a vivid imagination and loved to play "make believe." Writing was the natural next step. I made up stories to entertain myself, stories to entertain my family, stories to entertain my friends - and my parents and teachers encouraged me.

My Muse? I'm supposed to have a MUSE? That's an amusing notion. For Trockle, my "Muse" was known as "Frustration." My inspiration was my son, and the need for both of us to get some sleep. Normally my "Muse," if you can call it that, appears in the form of the story's characters. They talk to me. They do whatever it is they do, and I take dictation.

Trockle is the little monster's name. He told me that, himself. It seemed a good title for the book, too.

I have another book due to come out some time next year with 4RV Publishing, A Puppy, Not a Guppy. I was delighted when Jordan agreed to do the illustrations for it.

Who came up for the look for Trockle? What you read in the book is what Jordan had, from me, to work with - the rest is all her imagination at play. It is really a marvelous thing to work with an artist who just "gets it"; there wasn't one thing I would change about her illustrations. I just love that I can trust her to bring my words to life with her art, without any more explanation than what's in the story.

I'm glad to see a few comments coming through, although this verification system is going to be a bit of a deterrent.  Anyone hear from Steph?  Can she turn off verifications or make it so that they are less of a hassle?

Holly, thanks for answering Steph's questions.  We all have different forms of inspiration to get us to the end product.

Rena, it shouldn't be too long before you have your copy.  Then we will look forward to your review.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a post - hope more folks show up here - E :)

I’m a CERT volunteer, so I’ll be taking off work early today and maybe throughout the week to help staff one of the “PODs” – points of distribution for food, ice, and water. Many traffic lights are still out, making driving hazardous and it is unwise to attempt it after dark (the 9 PM curfew is not unreasonable from a safety standpoint).

I will drop back by to answer any questions once I'm safely back to the comforts of home. Please spare a kind thought or a prayer for those who are still in need after Hurricane Ike.

LOL!!! That first paragraph was my cryptic response to the need to enter complicated captcha codes!

(Actually, it's just the garbage from copying/pasting from Word. Sorry.)

Thanks so much for answering the questions. I think for almost all us writers, we've been writing ever since we can remember.   It's nice to see what inspires other writers.  I'm glad to have you pop in!

Ely,

Sorry about that.  There was a "captcha" set in place. I went ahead and unset it so it should be easier to leave comments.  I hope it wasn't too much of an inconvience.  Again, I apologize.  If there are still problems, let me know.

No worries, Holly. I'll see if I can't delete that. I took the "captcha's" off so it should be easier to post.

My hearts and prayers go out to those who endeared Hurricane Ike. I'm watching MSNBC and I see that the damage is Texas is awful.  Bless you for volunteering.

I was so glad to visit your blog today and see the review for TROCKLE.  It truly is one of the best children's books out in the past several years according to my grandchildren who delight that mom or dad read to them each and every night at bedtime.  They have grown up with many books in their own personal library, but when Grandma is asked to read several books, Trockle is always one of the stack smilingly carried to my lap.

Thanks Holly for a delightful story to take the scare out of bedtime imaginations, and to Jordan for her wonderful friendly monsters who become friends with the readers.

QUESTION RESPONSES:
In response to your questions Steph:
I have been drawing since I was about 5 years old, and have continued ever since. I was actually extremely quiet as a child (I know Holly and Vivian will have trouble believing that) and spent a lot of my time drawing. I would get absolutely lost in it. Oddly enough, when I was working on those drawings they were always a visual story. I was in essence illustrating before I even knew what it was.
I do have more children's books coming up. I am currently working on Prarie Dog Cowboy. Right after that one is Spider in Our Mailbox. After that Holly and I will be tackling A Puppy, Not a Guppy.
As far as the way Trockle looks, I would give Holly credit. She so vividly portrayed him with her words, that it made it easy for me too see what she saw. Fortunately we were on the same page. Holly, well, she really rocks.

Ahh, Jordan, you're too kind!

I just got back from the "POD" - a point of distribution for handing out bottled water, ice, and MREs.  I am hot and sweaty, but it felt good to be able to do SOMETHING to help less fortunate neighbors. I met a few people who got out of Galveston and Crystal Beach before the storm, and now have nothing left to go home to. Their positive attitudes were amazing.

One woman offered me gum. Most thanked us for being out there in the heat, doing what we were doing. One woman bought pizzas for some of the others waiting in the distribution lines, and others bought pizzas for the volunteers. The Chinese buffet gave the volunteers free meals to thank us for helping their suppliers and customers cross the long distribution lines and for working hard to help our neighbors. It's always such a humbling experience, because it never seems like that much work while you're doing it.

I think maybe it wasn't enough...I got home tonight, and while we still have power, our A/C is not working properly. We can't even get through to a repair place. But that's okay - as my husband says, I'll get my wish tonight and be able to sleep with a window open.
